Notes: | The Elstree and Borehamwood Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this town in the historic county of Middlesex. Now part of Hertfordshire, Elstree and Borehamwood is a fusion of two once-separate settlements whose names denote their Anglo-Saxon origins. The town council sponsored a design competition won by 11-year-old Lily Saron. Her flag comprised a black tree in silhouette against a green and yellow background, reflecting the town’s rural surroundings and elements in the names of Elstree and Borehamwood. The judges added a yellow Saxon crown to evoke the town’s location astride the boundary between two Anglo-Saxon kingdoms: Essex and Mercia. For further information, see John Cartledge’s article in Flagmaster 164 (2022) OR Elstree and Borehamwood Town Crier 40 (Winter 2020). |
