Notes:

The Berwickshire Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic Scottish county.

The flag consists of two horizontal panels, in blue above and green below, recalling Berwickshire’s coast, rivers and land.

Between them a chain represents the Union Chain Bridge that spans the river Tweed and the present Anglo-Scottish border.

This symbolises Berwickshire’s important role as a link between the two countries, as well as past fluctuations in the border line.

Upon the blue panel is a salmon representing the importance of sea and coarse fishing to the county.

It also references the Berwickshire Marine Reserve, designated to protect biodiversity, sustainable fishing and responsible recreational use.

On the green panel is an ear of barley (or bere). This represents local agriculture and also a possible origin of the name Berwickshire.

In a competition organised by Berwickshire Civic Society, the new Berwickshire Flag was one of five finalists shortlisted by a local judging panel for inclusion in a public vote.

Its creator chose to remain anonymous and donated the £250 prize to a local charity.
