Notes: | The Berwickshire Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic Scottish county. The flag consists of two horizontal panels, blue above and green below, evoking Berwickshire’s coast, rivers and land. Between them is a chain that represents the Union Chain Bridge, spanning the river Tweed and the present Anglo-Scottish border. It also symbolises Berwickshire’s important linking role between the two nations, and past fluctuations in the border line. On the blue panel, a salmon represents the importance of sea and coarse fishing to the county. It also references the Berwickshire Marine Reserve, designated to protect biodiversity, sustainable fishing and responsible recreational use. On the green panel, an ear of barley (or bere) represents local agriculture and a possible origin of the name Berwickshire. The new Berwickshire Flag won a competition organised by Berwickshire Civic Society, after a local judging panel shortlisted five finalists for inclusion in a public vote. Its creator chose to remain anonymous and donated the Β£250 prize to a local charity.
