We are sad to report that Commander Bruce Nicolls RN died on 2 July 2023 at the age of 91.
Bruce served in the Royal Navy (1946–82), where he first became interested in vexillology and heraldry.
He was a prolific designer of flags, including those of Guernsey, the Mary Rose Trust and the Royal Naval Museum.
He also designed and supplied flags for local councils, companies, clubs and other organisations and individuals.
Bruce served as the Flag Institute Secretary (1983–8), President (1991–7) and Chairman (1997).
In 2001 he became a Fellow of FIAV and more recently donated his books and papers to the William Crampton Library.
His funeral will take place at Markeaton Crematorium, Derby, Tuesday 1 August, 11am and afterwards at Kedleston Country House Hotel.
