Notes: | The Norfolk Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic English county. This design is the banner of the arms attributed to Ralph (Ranulph) de Gael (de Guader), first Earl of Norfolk (1071—5). The de Gael banner has represented the county throughout the centuries. It forms the basis of many county emblems, including the arms of Norfolk County Council (1904). However, the latter also display a red chief with royal emblems added by request of King Edward VII. Several public and private bodies expressed their support for this flag, collated and co-ordinated by Dominic Victor Maverick Smith. Prominent among them were Norfolk Family History Society and the Norfolk Broads Authority. Norfolk County Council neither support nor oppose the registration. Nor did they wish to request the registration of their own banner. |
