Notes: | The Sussex Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic English county. The flag displays six gold martlets on an azure field, the traditional emblem of Sussex. The origins of the emblem may lie in medieval personal heraldry. However, cartographer John Speed (1552—1629) made its first recorded use to denote the kingdom of the South Saxons. In his Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine (1611/12), Speed used it twice in a map depicting the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. |
