Notes: | The Suffolk Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic English county. On a field of blue, the flag displays in yellow the Suffolk emblem of a crown and crossed arrows. This is the emblem attributed to St Edmund, the king of East Anglia murdered by the Vikings in 869. By tradition arrows were the instrument of his martyrdom. A shrine and cult later developed in Bury St Edmunds, and the emblem gradually came to represent the county as a whole. The flag is already in popular use during Suffolk County Day celebrations. Several local organisations requested this registration. Suffolk County Council also gave its approval. |
