Notes: | The Merioneth Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic Welsh county. The design in question derives from the seal used by the former Meirionnydd (Merioneth)* County Council. In turn this seal derives from Michael Drayton (1563โ1631), who described the banner borne by the men of Meirionnydd at Agincourt (1415). In his poem ‘Agincourt’, Drayton wrote of ‘three goats dancing โgainst a rising sun’. The shield was blue, the sun golden and the goats white. This unusual arrangement has led to much speculation. One suggestion is a link with Cader Idris, where goats browsed and behind which the sun rose. * Also known as Merionethshire, Sir Feirionnydd and Mervinia |
